Today, we remember and honor the the lives and legacies of Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Chaney Champagne, and his partner, Detective Kurt ‘Woody’ Harrelson.

On July 31, 2003, Detective Champagne and Detective Harrelson were responding to an emergency call for assistance. An elderly woman was trapped in a car that had gone into a canal and the car was beginning to fill with water.

For some unknown reason, the detective’s vehicle began to spin out of control and crashed into an oncoming truck. Detective Champagne and Detective Harrelson both died at the scene.

Detective Champagne had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for twenty-two years. Prior to his time with the LPSO, he was self-employed as a cattleman, and worked for Nicolaus Paper Company, Bollinger Shipyards, and the Lockport Police Department.

Sergeant Harrelson had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for over ten years. Prior to his time with the LPSO, he worked for the Woodmen of the World, the Thibodaux Police Department, and the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office.
