NEVER FORGET

9/11/2025

Picture
September 11, 2001 — a heartbreaking day in our nation’s history; many innocent men and women lost their lives.

The first responders, particularly the members of Fire Department New York and the New York Police Department, did not turn away.

Instead, they rushed into the World Trade Center buildings while the world around them crumbled. Many lost their lives, while others who ‘survived’ still suffer the physical and emotional burdens that were given them that day.

Today — twenty-four years later — their memory and legacy lives on in the hearts of the men and women who continue to serve our communities.

We will never forget them, nor will we ever forget what they stood for. #neverforget #343

HAPPY LABOR DAY

Happy Labor Day to the workers of every field! The world runs on your contributions and you all deserve respect, recognition, and a day to relax. We hope you have a great one!

FOUR YEARS LATER

8/29/2025

Picture
As the sun rose on Monday, August 30, 2021, tens of thousands of our region’s 200,000 residents were homeless, water and power supplies were cut, and mangled debris was all that remained of many families’ homes and businesses. The pain and loss were tremendous.

New Orleans garnered national attention, but the depth of destruction here at home was far worse. Ida was our storm, and our people were hurting.

Hurricane Ida really dealt a serious and costly blow to our community. And in the aftermath, we quickly came to realize that our salvation wasn’t anyone else’s responsibility. So many people stepped up and responded to the needs of others.

They went out and obtained supplies. They helped provide for the basic needs of the community. Fire stations and churches served as a connect points for food distribution, and for the distribution of water, ice and cleaning supplies. Volunteer firefighters, law enforcement officers, and church members spent countless hours and many sleepless nights tending to the needs of the community. Fire stations and houses of worship even housed soldiers from the Louisiana National Guard.

Four years later, the memories still haunt many of us. But three years later, the extent of our gratitude only grows for the local heroes from our communities who really ‘showed up and showed out’ when they were called upon prior to — and in the aftermath of — Hurricane Ida.

In the wake of Hurricane Ida, those days were our finest hour. Many of us did some of our best work, and so many people served and so many people deserve credit for their selfless acts, for their random acts of kindness in the wake of the storm.

The real story of Hurricane Ida was not the images that we saw on social media and on television. The real legacy is people just helped peal away all that isolates us from each other, and that allowed for human to human connections.

TODAY, WE REMEMBER

Today, we remember Toni  Blanchard.

Toni’s significant contributions to the profession of emergency medical services and her steadfast commitment to her role have had a lasting influence on her coworkers, the community, and the numerous lives she impacted.

Toni Blanchard’s journey with Acadian began in 1992 when she was hired as an EMT. Her career was marked by a commitment to excellence and a passion for patient care. She transitioned to Acadian Air Med in 2016, where she served as a certified flight registered nurse and flight paramedic before taking on the role of Chief Flight Nurse and Education Supervisor.

In this capacity, Toni was responsible for overseeing critical aspects of flight nurse and paramedic education, including CAMTS education and credentialing requirements, RN clinical practice clearance, and the management of Air Med’s blood program. Air Med Program Director Marc Creswell reflected on Toni’s impact: “Toni was the heart and the den mother of Air Med. She was always there for her staff to discuss problems or concerns while also helping each staff member keep themselves held to the highest expectations of performance.”

Her biggest impact to Air Med was taking orientation and training to its highest level, and the benefactors were the patients served, the community, the flight crews, and Air Med as a whole. Some people go through life wondering if they made a difference, but not Toni: she made the biggest difference.

Toni's contributions and spirit will be remembered with great fondness and respect. She leaves behind a legacy of dedication and care that will continue to resonate within the communities across Louisiana and beyond and in the hearts of all who knew her.

Toni’s memory will continue to be cherished by all who knew her. Her legacy will live on, and her impact on the lives of those around her will never be forgotten.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

7/4/2025

Picture
Former President Harry S. Truman once said that ‘America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination, and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand’.

Each and every day, that courage, imagination and unbeatable determination lives on in those who keep the American dream alive.

Wishing all of you a safe and happy Independence Day.

FIRE HYDRANT TESTING

7/2/2025

Picture
From Monday, July 14th, 2025, through Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, a third party contractor will be performing physical inspections and flow testing of the fire hydrants in the Choctaw community.

Residents may experience low water pressure as well as discoloration of water during the testing process. This is normal during fire hydrant testing, and should not be cause for alarm.

EMS WEEK

5/18/2025

Picture
The dedication and lifesaving skills of EMS professionals are put to the test every day. They are called to care in big cities and in small towns, in private homes, businesses, schools and on our nation's roadways.

Whether it’s saving a young victim of a motor vehicle crash, helping an elderly patient who’s forgotten to take her medication, stabilizing a construction worker experiencing chest pain on the jobsite, or treating an overdose on a city street, they are trained and ready to deliver a range of medical interventions and support.

Their roles and responsibilities are constantly growing and changing and they quickly rise to the challenge. From community paramedicine to preventive healthcare, they are tasked with providing next-level patient navigation and care in new surroundings, using new technologies.

They are there for our community, whenever and wherever they are needed.

Because THEY CARE. FOR EVERYONE.

THANK YOU, CONOCOPHILLIPS

5/15/2025

Picture
Thanks to a grant from ConocoPhillips, Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department was able to acquire some much needed equipment to help us better serve our community.

We were able to purchase a GX Force Portable Gas Monitor, which will come in handy after hurricanes and other natural disasters, when portable generator use is extremely common. The GX Force is a portable 4-gas monitor designed for confined space entry and general safety monitoring. It's a lightweight, durable, and easy-to-use instrument capable of detecting four common hazardous gases: LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) combustibles, Oxygen, Carbon Monoxide, and Hydrogen Sulfide.

We were also able to purchase two iPad devices which will make completing reports a much simpler task.

PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY

Today, we honor Peace Officers Memorial Day, a part of National Police Week.

Peace Officers Memorial Day pays tribute to law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. We value our strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies throughout our protection area, and we salute all of our first responder partners during National Police Week.

THE ORIGINAL FIRST RESPONDER

5/9/2025

Picture
As we take time to appreciate the moms in our lives this Mother’s Day, we can’t help but notice how their contribution to our health and safety has been amplified over the past few years. Now more than ever, mothers are the “essential” workers responding to their family’s growing needs. So, as we consider the many jobs mothers take on daily, let’s acknowledge and appreciate the impact that mothers have on all our lives.

Talk about a full plate — meal planning and prep, taking the lead with their children’s education, and providing emotional care and support, all while fending off the financial insecurity that rules the day for almost everyone. Moms address these needs as a matter of necessity — it’s like an instinct or reflex. And with all the distractions of everyday life, these efforts on an already full plate often go unnoticed.

This Mother's Day, we honor and celebrate the incredible moms in our community who keep us safe, strong and feeling loved. Your courage and resilience inspire us every day.

Wishing all the mothers out there a day filled with love, appreciation, and warmth.

Thank you for everything you do!

THINKING OF OUR FRIEND

3/21/2025

Picture
As we get ready for another Choctaw Fireman's Fair, one of our friends -- a man who was kind of a local legend -- is once again at the top of our minds: Mr. Onda Templeton.

Onda was a school crossing guard and deputy with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for many years, and at this time of year, he was usually getting ready to help keep everyone safe at our annual Choctaw Fireman’s Fair.

This will be our fourth year without him being here doing what he did best: serving the citizens of Lafourche Parish. He will forever be missed for his dedication, loyalty, professionalism, sense of humor, and some of the corniest jokes ever told

TRUCK BLESSING & DEDICATION

3/9/2025

Picture
On March 19th, 1989, Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department experienced the great accomplishment of receiving its first new fire apparatus (pumper) that the department was able to purchase.

Today, many years later, we gathered with our friends and families to once again celebrate this type of milestone. The second new fire truck to be purchased has officially arrived and received a blessing.

With the hard work from many, this great dream has become reality. Many thanks to the Lafourche Parish Fire Protection District 8-B, State Representative Fontenot, Chief Ward of Sunbelt Fire, and most importantly the community of Choctaw!

While the truck won't be officially placed in service for a few more weeks while the finishing touches get completed. It was great to gather and celebrate the arrival, blessing, and dedication of only the second new pumper to be purchased since the departments incorporation in 1983.

Many thanks!

PRESS RELEASE

2/21/2025

Picture
We are proud to announce that Lafourche Parish Fire Protection Distriet 8-B (Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department) has officially purchased a new fire apparatus (pumper).

Over the years, Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department has received overwhelming support from the community and surrounding areas. Support from the fire district's parcel fee, state funding assistance with the support of State Representative Bryan Fontenot, and financial support from the Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department have made this purchase possible. In additon, we would also like to thank Mr. Keith Ward and the rest of the Sunbelt Fire team for their outstanding support throughout the purchasing process.

A project that began back in 2023 has now become reality as of this morning when Mr. Leroy Cortez, Jr. (District Chairman), executed documents accepting the newly delivered truck. While the truck has been delivered and accepted, it will remain at the local dealership for a moment to professionally finalize some upfits.

This is a major accomplishment for a small rural department that was incorporated in 1983 under the leadership of Fire Chief Michael Delatte. To date, this is only the second "new" firetruck to be purchased by the organization. The first was a 1988 unit that remains in the department's fleet.

With the acquisition of this new piece of equipment comes many other enhancements to the organization's capabilities. While focusing on a continuous improvement process, the organization has also recently made many other equipment purchases to better serve and protect the district.

The organization has scheduled an Open House / Truck Dedication Ceremony on March 9, 2025 and would like to invite everyone to attend. Additional information will soon be shared.

We would like to once again "Thank" everyone for their continued support and for making accomplishments like this possible.

EXTRICATION TRAINING

2/12/2025

On Saturday, 8 February 2025, members of the Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department participated in a training exercise to gain proficiency in the use of our newly acquired Hurst 358 Combi Tool (Jaws of Life). The training exercise was conducted by Darryl Foret, a Rescue Specialist with Municipal Emergency Services (MES).

This new tool was acquired with funding obtained from the State Farm Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program and from ConocoPhillips. Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department was one of one-hundred fire departments nationwide that were selected to receive a $10,000 grant from State Farm, and one of only two departments in the State of Louisiana to receive this funding, which was based on a competitive application process.
